City of Williston Seeks Community Input on Huge Redevelopment Project
The City of Williston is seeking community input on the future planning, design and management of a
massive redevelopment in Williston. The first of three town hall meetings will be held on Wednesday,
Feb. 22, from 6-8 p.m. at the Williston Area Recreation Center.
Construction on the Sloulin Field Redevelopment Project will begin after the new Williston Basin
International Airport (XWA) opens (estimated in 2019). Williston City Administrator David Tuan
emphasizes that the two projects complement each other.
“The XWA project is on schedule and on budget,” said Tuan. “Construction will begin as soon as weather permits in the spring. We anticipate the new airport will take approximately two years to complete.”
During the new airport’s build out, the master planner of the Sloulin Field Redevelopment, Cardon
Global, will be gathering inspiration and ideas. Essentially, the community will have a rare opportunity to reimagine the 800-plus acre site in the heart of Williston. The first chance for local residents to weigh in on their ideas will be at the Feb. 22 meeting.
“I really think people will have a lot of fun at this meeting. You will hear a lot of ideas; and some of them will definitely be outside of the box,” said Shawn Wenko, Williston Economic Development executive director. “But this is how the process starts. The final plans will represent what the public wants.”
Keypad polling will be utilized during the meeting. The process will allow participants to vote on the
concepts and ideas that are introduced. Cardon Global has already shared some potential concepts
during a Dec. 9, 2016 meeting with Williston business and civic leaders. Kurt Culbertson, CEO and
Chairman of Design Workshop was one of the primary presenters. He will also play a key role in the Feb. 22 gathering.
“We want to create some cool places that everyone wants to go to,” said Culbertson. “This is the
beginning of a process to derive a community-based vision.”
The Sloulin Field Redevelopment Community Input meeting is open to the public. The second meeting is scheduled June 7 and the final meeting will be held Sept. 20 from 6-8 p.m. at the Williston Area
